Colchester United Community Player of the Year
12th May 2011

U's striker Steven Gillespie has come in for praise for his contribution to the community during the past season.

Steven was given the Hospital Radio Colchester Community Player of the Year award on Tuesday night at the club's Player of the Year dinner.

The Liverpudlian has given up plenty of his time to community and public visits over the past nine months and was one of the club's four player ambassadors for our official charities.

Ronnie Smyth, Hospital Radio Colchester's Football Commentary Team Leader told the website: "It was nice to see Steven Gillespie get awarded the trophy.

"It's a compliment to a player, who although he has been injured on occasion, he has still managed to make time for projects within the community.

"For any player who must be frustrated at not being able to play, it must be difficult to go and still put a smile on his face, and this deserves to be recognised. Congratulations to Steven a worthy winner."

Steven followed Simon Hackney in picking up the award this season, with Mark Yeates and Pat Baldwin also amongst the previous winners.
