STUDIOS

Our main studios are currently in the process of moving to South Lodge, Turner Road in Colchester which will house our main studio complex. We also have remote locations at Colchester United Football Club at Layer Road for broadcast of football matches and the Colchester General Hospital Chapel.

Studio 1 is our main on-air control room. Opened in the autumn of 1999 thanks to a lottery grant, many generous donations and our own fundraising. This studio is used for all of our on-air work. The mixer is an Alice Air 2000 Broadcast Console (28 frame width) and this includes:

4x Line input modules, for CD's & MD's, 4x Line input modules with EQ, for Gram's, O.S. (outside sources) & PC, 5x Mic input modules, for desk mic, control room guest mic & talk studio mics, 1x Telephone input module, 1x 8 input, 2 output, line selector module, for O.S. selection, Script tray, Control Room Monitor, Studio Monitor & Output/Master Modules

Supporting the main Alice desk we have a number of peripheral items:

2x Technics SL-PG950 Compact Disk Players, 2x Sony MDS-JE520 Minidisc Players, 2x Technics SL1200 Mk2 turntables, PC running Windows 95 & Caban (a computerised playout system for Jingles), 2x AKG D190 Microphones, Denon DPM710 Cassette Deck, 48 way Rean patch bay, offering access to record circuits, record & auxiliary outputs, plugable line inputs, and Tielines to other studios. Alice Levil Devil Limiter, for over enthusiastic DJ's! Sonifex HY-02 Telephone Hybrid

Studio 2 is used mainly for production and training but also has the facility to go on-air. It contains a Partridge Electronics 13 Channel Mixer Desk as well as the normal peripheral equipment.

The Green Room is an area for quiet preparation away from the library/lounge. It also houses a number of engineering items.

The Talk Studio is situated between the two control rooms and can be used by either control room (live on-air, or for off-air recording). equipment is kept to a minimum to allow presenters to concentrate on their programme.

Our programs are broadcast via a dedicated feed from the studio to the two major hospitals in Colchester, the Essex County and District General Hospital.  This feed is private and not available for general listening.

We have a BT land-line to Layer Road Football Ground where Colchester United home matches are covered live. The Layer road link can be used in a "half duplex" mode (one way, then the other) in order allow 2 way conversations between presenters and commentators.

We use the Tieline outside broadcast unit to link the Chapel at the Colchester General Hospital to the studio. This service is transmitted back to the studios, and then re-broadcast to the patients.

The Tieline also enables us to cover events outside the studio with ease as long as we have a standard telephone line available on location. The sound quality of the unit is excellent and is of near studio quality.

Hospital Radio Colchester has a library collection that tries to include all the songs that may be requested by our listeners. This means we have a very diverse collection that spans the complete spectrum of music. The library is kept up-to-date with new releases and popular hits that are often requested.
