FOOTBALL COMMENTARY AT COLCHESTER UNITED
Hospital Radio Colchester broadcasts home games played by Colchester United live from Layer Road.  Full commentaries have been relayed to local hospitals since 1953: the service was initially supplied by the Supporters' Club using direct links via telephone lines rented from the GPO.  Highlights of the service have been commentaries on the U’s famous FA Cup victory over Leeds United in 1971 and on both the matches Colchester played at Wembley in the 1990s.
Commentaries now originate from the box high on the roof of the main stand at Layer Road, just below the camera gantry; the position is unrivalled for the extent of the view. They are supplied back to the
main studio by BT land lines and are then transmitted through the normal Hospital Radio Colchester network to the hospitals.  The service from Hospital Radio Colchester is only available in the hospitals.

The commentary team today consists of one of the original members, Godfrey Thomas who's father Arthur together with Eric Southernwood (who has only recently retired from commentating) was responsible for setting up the service in 1953. Godfrey is joined by Dave Buckingham, Ronnie Smyth and Ted Dwan.  Each match has a commentator, summariser and a roving mic down in the dugouts and in with the supporters.
Hospital Radio Colchester also provides an audio feed within the ground for supporters who have restricted vision or who are blind.  This can be arranged through the club who will be happy to book you in the correct seats.
