The 2008 Colchester Fire Swim takes place on the weekend 4th / 5th October...
Hospital Radio Colchester has been involved in Colchester Fireswim for a number of years. As well as having a team swimming raising money for the event, the Hospital Radio Colchester Roadshow provides PA and poolside music for the whole 24 hours as well as broadcasting LIVE from the event!
The first Colchester Fire Swim took place in October 1981 and has continued to be an annual charity event, which takes place at Colchester Leisure World, Cowdray Avenue, Colchester on the first weekend in October.
The idea of the Fire swim is to have teams of six, swimming in relay for one hour - different teams then fill up the entire twenty-four hours. All swimmers are sponsored for the event and it is a fun event and is open to all ages and abilities.
All money raised is divided equally between the Fire Services National Benevolent Fund, and local charities / groups or deserving causes. In addition, trophies are awarded for the best fancy dress, the most lengths swum, the most sponsorship raised by an individual team and a special award ‘The Trevor Porter Trophy’ for outstanding contribution to the Fire Swim. To date the event has given away over £400,000.00!
